Gallery EXIT 安全口画廊呈献香港艺术家徐世琪的个人展览The Hartford Girl and Other Stories。
以一系列描绘着不同人类，植物，和昆虫混合形态，仿照着古典医学草图风格的精致绘画而知名的徐世琪，不但对肌体的知觉与图像深感兴趣，亦从她的行为艺术作品中，如One Woman Apartment（2008） 与 Angela Su， 2010 （2010），不断探索着当身体受到危害或困扰下，艺术家双重身份之中所存在的张力。
徐氏的最新作品The Hartford Girl and Other Stories亦继续探索身体感官这个主题。作品源起自与策展人 Valerie C. Doran 及文化历史学家 Sander L. Gilman 对Stigmatics计划所带出的讨论，徐氏今次专注于当代文化中常见的自残模式，和当中肉体与精神之间所沉殿着的种种意义。
The Hartford Girl and Other Stories是由一个录像作品和六张照片所组成，并从一个多层次寓言型式来记录着被刺青于艺术家背上的三十九条或字句的无墨纹身。这纹身正正参考着圣经记载里耶稣被钉在十字架之前所遭受到的鞭数。纹身与录像中的文字叙述亦可同时被视为是艺术家所创造的拼贴；纹身里展示了一段段断断续续的祷文，而录像中的「剪辑片段」则并列着不同真实与虚构经历、歌词、新闻报告、和随机知识。徐氏作品中记叙了多个关于祷告、痛苦、自我表达、绝望、分离 （和其它东西）的视觉与文字故事存在于不同层面的交接，但问题最终归去我们在听的，是属于谁的声音。

Gallery Exit is pleased to present The Hartford Girl and Other Stories, a solo exhibition by Hong Kong artist Angela Su.
Widely known for her series of drawings depicting intricate hybrid forms of humans, flora, and insects that stylistically reference classical medical sketches, Angela Su has been continually interested in exploring not only the perception and imagery of the body, but also, through her performance-based works such as One-Woman-Apartment (2008) and Angela Su, 2010 (2010), the tension of the artist's dualistic state of being when under physical endangerment or distress.
In her latest work, The Hartford Girl and Other Stories, Su further explores this theme of the felt experience of the body. Stemming from a series of discussions with cultural historian Sander L. Gilman and curator Valerie C. Doran within the framework of the 'Stigmatics' project, Su brings her focus to the spectrum of self-mutilation practices in contemporary culture, and the complexities of meaning that reside within the body and the psyche.
Comprised of a video and six photographic prints, The Hartford Girl and Other Stories is a multi-layered, allegorical narrative whose central image documents the intensive process of creation of a complex, inkless tattoo composed of 39 lines or 'slashes' of text written freehand on the artist's back. The tattoo references the Biblical account of the number of lashes received by Jesus prior to his crucifixion. The literal narratives in both the tattoo and the video are collages created by the artist, one consisting of fragments of prayers and the other of juxtaposed 'clips' of real and fictional experiences, song lyrics, news reports and random facts. The visual and literal 'stories' of prayer, pain, self-expression, desperation, detachment (and other things) being told in Su's work exist on many levels of encounter, but reside ultimately in the question of whose voice is actually heard.

Stigmatics is a collaborative, cross-disciplinary project involving artist Angela Su, cultural historian Sander L. Gilman, musician and composer Ah-Kok Wong and curator Valerie C. Doran, exploring issues related to the phenomenon of self-mutilation practices in contemporary society, from tattooing to body modification to self-harm, and their implications in both general society and artistic practice.
