2015北京798艺术节“推介展”主题展:新民间转换

2015北京798艺术节第四届艺术家作品推介展

仅仅用了十几年的时间,798就从一个旧式国营工厂区,变成了中国当代艺术最重要的平台之一。纵观世界艺术和经济史,这样一种基因突变都是十分罕见的——传统是如此迅速地被解构,甚至那些传统的遗迹——荒废的工厂、废弃的铁轨等等,都变成了当代艺术加工和再创造的对象。

如今,每天都有成千上万来自全国乃至全世界的艺术家、商人、游客汇入798,并在这里对话、碰撞。在国人眼中,798已经成为一个时代的符号——它深深地嵌入了中国当代艺术的挣扎、发展和繁荣。毫无疑问,在这个意义上,798已经取得了相当的成功。然而,在未来的十年、二十年,甚至更久的未来,人们又将如何定义798?从四年前,我们就开始思考这个问题,并以艺术节推介展的形式进行了持续的探索。“介”,恰如其形,道出了798十几年来的成功经验——像桥梁一样,将艺术、创意与市场、经济链接到一起,创造了1+1>2的共赢。

经过四年的探索,我们认为,798的未来仍系于“介”——在市场和经济之外,798可“介”入的,仍有很多。限制798的,只有想象力。

传统民间文化的差异性、民族特征由于工业化、现代化、全球一体化进程的机械、智能生产逐渐灭绝,由于民间文化靠朴素的传承中求发展,必然跟不上快速发展的时代节奏,这时当代人除了需要承担着一份保护和传承这个无价遗产的责任,就是以另一种传承的方式即以当代的媒介与技术、语言来转换其形态,保存传统民间文化的核心精神,避免全球高科技人造化文明带来的一极化发展,让差异的本土文化精神得以的延展。这里“转换”亦即一种创造,将传承与创造有效地结合起来。“新民间转换”展览我们邀请的艺术家也可以把转换后的艺术与转换前的传统民间符号和工艺进行对照,来体现两者核心同源的价值。未来除了高科技带来的人工化便捷的生存方式,另外一种表达方式就是人们追求朴素自然的手工慢节奏的生存状态。当代艺术中民间手工工艺的运用与转换是一个趋势,它所表现的质感和特点是工业化技术永远不具备的。手工工艺耗时、耗力、耗成本引发了工业革命对资本高效的追求。人造科技创造了新的媒介艺术,然而手工原创技术仍然具有未来感,两者会永远平行或交织发展。虽然民间文艺的当代转换的展览,近期成为热题,但是需要更多的策展人介入,对传统民间文化继承的责任、领悟其永恒的精神、工艺传承的有效性是这个展览的目的。

2015 BEIJING 798 ART FESTIVAL•ART WORK PROMOTION EXHIBITION

It is just in a little longer than ten years that the “798” area has been transfigured from a dated state-owned manufacturing site that had housed such factories as the No. 798 Electronics Factory into the Beijing 798 Art Zone, one of the most significant platforms for modern art in China. Such a “genetic mutation” is rarely seen in the history of art and the history of economy across the world: the conventional in the zone has been deconstructed in a wink, so to speak, with those legacies of the conventional (factories obsoleted into a wilderness, the deserted railroad and so on) turned into objects for modern art.

Nowadays, artists, businesspersons and tourists from around the country and even around the world have been streaming into 798 each day, where dialogues, even to the extent of “collision”, occur. As a matter of fact, 798 has been regarded by Chinese enthusiasts as something, something being a sign of this era, something deeply embedded into China’s modern art, in terms of its struggling, developing and booming. In this sense, 798 has, of course, fairly succeeded, but how will it be defined by people 10 years, 20 years or even more distant into the future? This has been a question we embarked on pondering as early as four years ago, a question that is continually explored, this time in the form of the 798-Mediated Arts Expo of the Arts Festival.Mediation is translated into Chinese as 介, a Chinese character that vividly conveys how 798 has achieved over the 10+ years: it is just like a bridge that links art and creativity with the market and the corresponding economy behind it, a bridge enabling a win-win situation characterized by the phenomenon of 1+1>2.

The future for 798, in our view thru 4 years of probing, still lies with the concept of介: besides the market and the economy, 798 can “mediate” its way into many more spheres. What limits it is nothing more than an ebbing of imagination.

“Innovatively Transformed Folk Arts”

The difference and ethnic characteristics of traditional folk cultures have gradually come to extinction due to mechanical and intelligent production with the progress of industrialization, modernization and global integration. On the other hand, folk culture develops by the plain way of rational hand-down, which inevitably lags behind the tempo of the times characterized by swift development. In times of this conflict, contemporaries should shoulder their share of the responsibility to protect and carry on the priceless heritage of folk culture by relaying it in another way: i.e. by using contemporary mediums, technologies and languages to convert the form of folk culture, so as to conserve the essential spirit of the traditional folk culture, preclude unipolar development, which the global high-tech based artificial civilization is liable to, and extend and expand the spirit of the mutually diverse indigenous cultures. Here “transformation” involves creation of some sort, meaning an effective combination of hand-down and creation. In the Exhibition of “Innovatively Transformed Folk Arts”, the artists we invited are open to a comparison between the post-transformation art and the pre-transformation traditional folk signs and handicraft to show the value from the fact that the two are essentially homologous to each other. In the future, people will have the mode of existence featuring artificial quickness and convenience brought about by high technology. On the other hand, another mode of expression they pursue is the state of existence characteristic of plain and natural slow speed embodied by handiworking, for example. In contemporary art, there is a trend of utilizing the folk handicraft and/or having it transformed; such an involvement generates traits (such as the texture) that industrialized technologies always envy. Quite consuming time, labor and cost, handicraft has triggered the pursuit of efficient running of capital thru the Industrial Revolution; artificial science and technology has created, among other things, new medium-arts. Handiwork-based original techniques, however, still boasts futuristicity. Handicraft and techicraft will always develop in parallel or interwovenly. The exposition of folk art transformed in modern-art settings has recently become a hot topic, but it needs involvement by more expo-planners. This sub-expo has a 3-prong purpose: the responsibility for carrying on the traditional folk culture, the perception of its perpetual spirit and the effectiveness in the hand-down of handicraft.
