方力钧的创作的基础是基于个人对巨大社会背景下的普遍人性的观察和思考,那种本能地不愿意与社会惯习保持一直的态度一直存在于他的艺术表达中。他表现生命的渺小、琐屑、无聊的状态,不过是有意无意地对隐匿于社会现实背后的普遍意识和一般观念的反抗。从早期绘画作品到新近创作的众多雕塑作品,我们都可以看到一条属于艺术家特有的线索,那就是艺术家以自我对现实及存在的体认,来描绘最真实的生命存在,其中包括生命的来源与未来。这样,他在不同时期所勾画出来的生命状态就很自然地与历史与社会的语境发生了联系,他用自己创造出来的形象——无论是早期的头像还是以后的具有生命寓意的昆虫——来给出人的境况,即便艺术家使用了通俗的形象,也可以传达出对生命虚假意义给予的质疑。在很多情况下,艺术家经历的思想变化和成熟以及对生命的思考都是通过那些普普通通的图像和造型体现出来的,可是在方法和趣味上,正好与人们的习惯形成冲突,所以,无论批评家用什么术语去概括他的艺术,都无法遮蔽艺术家对生命问题的难以摆脱的诘难与美学困惑,这正是方力钧艺术的意义。
